I finished the quilt top for my grandson's quilt this week. I had purchased a template set for making stars a couple of years ago and had never used them before. I was surprised that it was definitely easier to use than I had expected. The stars came out probably more accurately cut than they would have otherwise. The rulers are called tri-mate by EZ quilt. I think they are sometimes refrred to as tri-rec rulers by other companies but I 'm not certain of that.
I had wanted to quilt this in a cotton batting but also make it a bit warmer than some of the other quilts I've made. Though houses are heated in colder states, (I live in Florida but my grandson lives in SC) a nice warm, cozy quilt is a comfort in the winter. I regularly read a quilt forum and asked for recommendations of a warm quilt batting. If you ever have some questions, go to a quilt forum. These quilters are helpful, friendly, and come up with ideas you proably would never have thought of. I now know that if I were to double a batting, the quilt could turn out much stiffer than I would have wanted it to be. I decided on the Warm and Natuarl batting with a high quality cotton flannel backing. I've prewashed the flannel because flannel shrinks a lot. I found this flannel at Walmart. Yes, they still sell fabric in some of their stores. It is also a high quality flannel called Super flannel. That was another surpise for me. Walmart fabric can sometimes be disappointing in quality. Honestly, this is a very nice 100% cotton flannel.
I haven't quilted it yet. The photo that I posted is only the finished piece top.
